KYSUCE
The Kysuce territory with the area of 935 km2 is situated in the north-western part of Žilina region. It borders on Poland and Czech Republic. The area is very rich in natural beauties and mountains like Kysucké Beskydy, Javorníky, Turzovská vrchovina nad Kysucká vrchovina. The highest peak is Veľká Rača – 1263meters above sea level.
The territory belonged to Trenčianska seat in Middle Ages and then to Považská country. Čadca and Kysucké Nové Mesto became district towns. In 4 towns and 33 villages live more than 126 000 inhabitants.
Čadca
The first written reference about the town is from the year 1565. Čadca became a feudal town with a market privilege in 1788. Very interesting are the architectural relics, memorial of Slovak volunteers in battles in 1948-1949 and the others.
Krásno nad Kysucou
This town is the youngest one in the region. It was granted the town status in 2001 however it ranks as a settlement among the oldest in Kysuce.
Kysucké Nové Mesto
The first mention about the town is from the year 1254. It was granted the town privilege according to Žilina´s rights. As the only town in the region, it has the a well preserved historical square.
Turzovka
Turzovka was founded by the landlord of the Bytča lordship Juraj Turzo in 1598. It was the largest village in Slovakia until 1954. The town´s statute was granted to Turzovka in 1968. Visitors can find the memorial room of the writer Rudolf Jašík here. The region has many interesting and unique cultural relics. The historical forest railway Nová Bystrica-Vychylovka belongs to national cultural relics. Kysuce has two urban protected zones in Klokočkov – Do Kršle, the second one in Kysucké Nové Mesto – Povina Tatári. Some very famous historical sights are Baroque church in Čadca built in 1735 with J.B.Klements´s painting, Neo-Gothic church in Raková, Baroque-Classicistic church in Zákopčie, Late-Baroque church in Skalité, Baroque church in Turzovka, Park and Manor-house in Oščadnica. Archeological locality Koscelisko near Radoľa belongs to Slovak cultural heritage. The region has 93 immovable and 81 movable cultural relics.
The Kysuce museum in Čadca with its frequently visited branch the Musuem of Kysucká village in Nová Bystrica -Vychylovka with open air ethnographical exhibition is one of the most important cultural sights in the region. The reconstructed part of the historical railway ”Kysucko-Oravská želenica” leads to the museum. One of the museum’s attractions is the ride on the historical train. Take time to order the specialties of a Kysuce cuisine in the reconstructed pub in Korňa. During the summer season in the museum you will find attractions such as folk art displays, folk customs and ceremonials specially put on for the tourists. It is possible to book these programs for large groups in advance.
Another branch of Kysucké museum is the manor-house in Radoľa. The Kysucká gallery in Čadca has its branch in manor-house in Oščadnica. Also Kysucká library is situated in Čadca. Makov, the place on a Czech and Slovak border, is the oldest tourism centre in Kysuce region. The whole area offers many possibilities for tourism and recreation in every season of the year. There are excellent conditions for downhill and cros-scountry skiing. In Oščadnica-Veľká Rača, tourist can find well equipped ski centers with many ski-lifts all around the region thanks to its perfect conditions and hillsides. The summit parts of Veľká Rača and Veľký Javorník are the national reservations. There is a well-known pilgrimage place with healing water streams and the St Mary´s chapel in the area of Turzovka.
